What a memorable day it was when my grandpa Shirl announced he was getting remarried at age 87. What should have been a celebration turned into a controversy with in my family. Previously he had been married to my grandma Dixie. Born May 28, 1914 he met my grandma in the mid-thirties. She was born April 16, 1918. After courting for a while they were married in June 1935. Making a life together they successfully raised five children to adulthood, losing one son soon after to lung cancer and another to heart complications in his early forties. Together they pushed forward and watched the remaining three raise families of their own. Married for 65 years, my grandma passed away suddenly on May 30, 2000. Leaving my grandpa living alone in the home they had lived in through out all of their marriage. It was hard seeing my grandpa living alone for the first time. It was even worse visiting him after her death. The house just seemed so empty and lonely. It must have been tough being left behind. Somehow my grandpa made it through those rough days. He started going with my mom to the LDS Jordan River Temple every Tuesday. My mom said it was because he wanted to help but I think he just wanted to get out of the house.
