Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854 in Dublin, Ireland. His mother, Lady Jane Francesca Oscar, was a poet and a journalist. His father, Sir William Oscar, was an antiquarian, gifted writer and a specialist in diseases of the eye and ear. Oscar studied at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh (1864-1871), Trinity College, Dublin (1871-184) and Magdalen College, Oxford (1874-1878). On April 19, 1876, Oscar’s father died, leaving the family financially strapped.
After graduation, Oscar moved to London to live with his friend Frank Miles. In December 1881, Oscar sailed for New York to travel across the United States and deliver lectures on aesthetics (the late 19th century movement in England that advocated art).
