Barriers to Effective Communication The following ineffective communication habits can make it more difficult to get the message across. Examine these issues, and try to implement the advice given below. · Inattentive listening. This can include some difficulty paying attention or finding interest in what others are saying. While this may be perfectly normal in certain situations, if it's a regular habit the problem could be you. Ponder these questions: Are you making an effort to listen to what other people say while keeping an open mind? Are you staying actively involved in the conversation by asking questions, etc? Some ways to stay tuned in is to make a connection between your own life and the topic, put the conversation in context or look for parallels with things you have heard before. · Interrupting other speakers. This might include cutting people off, finishing sentences, or jumping in with your own opinion.
