People nowadays need to open their minds and look past the color of skin and learn to acknowledge and understand that interracial dating is okay. ... Unfortunately, many people who have grown up in a different generations such as that around the mid 1950s when blacks were not allowed to be a part of the white society, have been taught never to consider befriending and for that matter even dating someone of another race. ... Even those who posses control over major universities such as the Bob Jones University in South Carolina have had what is called an Interracial Dating Ban since the 1950s. In this article, “Bob Jones University Drops Interracial Dating Ban” the Evangelical Press explains why and how this ban has affected their students. They justify that because by being a Christian University, the ban was enforcing interracial dating as wrong by saying that “God created people differently for a reason” (Evangelical Press 1). This article also goes on to say that this Interracial Dating ban was dropped because Bob Jones, president of BJU said, “It hurts me to be portrayed as an institution that teaches hate” (Evangelical Press 2). ... Because society is consistently changing its social and political views, why not try and teach children and parents alike the facts of interracial dating, and how it is not accepted with certain people. Maybe by conducting open discussions about how students feel this issue effects them, teachers will bring to their attention the importance of individual feelings when it comes to befriending and dating someone of another race. Open discussions on interracial dating, is exactly what Li-wen Ho wrote about when she wrote the article “Interracial Dating examined in Discussion”. In this article Ho simply published a student discussion about the feelings these students may have towards interracial dating. ... At least one student realizes that people who discourage interracial dating feel that it is all about pleasing people in their society. ... If dating another race isn’t accepted, you begin to look at your girlfriend or boyfriend differently just because they are a different color. ...
