Middle Age English literature is considered very popular today. Most of the Middle Age English that has survived today has to do with religion, but there are also secular works of literature that have survived. It is interesting to study this literature because Old and Middle Age English are the beginnings of literature so to speak.
The church had major control on literacy during the middle ages. Most of the people who were literate in the Middle Ages were clerics or had tried to become a cleric, otherwise they probably received no education or an elementary kind of education.
