The transition from boy to man can be a very difficult and soul-searching experience, especially for black men growing up in a society where all the odds are against them. Many young men find themselves caught between what they were taught to become and what society has in store for them. Life being the learning voyage that takes you through obstacles causes the young male to engage in acts that they wouldn’t normally do. From a woman looking from the outside in, I feel that men should find a passion and not adhere to everything that society wants them to adhere to. I know that being a black male in a white male dominated society can be hard to cope with, but it is very obtainable. In the short story "Battle Royal" Ellison expresses these concepts into greater depth. Within this story, there is an illustration of how a young male growing up in the south during a time when we still had segregation and equality was the main focus of many African-Americans.
