Othello versus Desdemona
In the play Othello, written by William Shakespeare, a man named Othello and his wife, Desdemona, have leading roles. Othello is the General of the Venetian Army and Desdemona is the daughter of a Venetian Senator, Barbantio. ...
Othello and Desdemona are in love despite obvious differences between them. Othello is a Moor and a General of the Venetian Army. ... Othello was respected as an excellent General but was still not given enough credit in Venice. One such incident shows how Othello is given a lack of respect. “In Othello, white Venice’s collective sense of what constitutes insider and outsider status…is challenged: Venice sends Othello, a Moor, to Cyprus as its commissioned representative in opposing the Turks. It is testimony to how thoroughly Othello is seen to have assimilated to a Venetian value-system that he, so visibly a non-Venetian, is chosen to serve as its strategic ambassador elsewhere”(Buchanan, 1).
