I selected this topic because communicating effectively with coworkers and upper management at Reed Construction Data (RCD) my place of employment has always been of importance to me. ... While analyzing RCD, I realized that effective communication skills were needed in several of the company’s departments. Effective communication is one of the most important workplace skills, and yet this is an area that frequently causes more problems for people than any other. ... Because we spend so much of our lives at work it is certainly important that we enjoy what we are doing and that we get along with those we work with. With effective communication an employee becomes more efficient and their surroundings are less stressful. ... I have noticed that some of this new communication technology is abused or ignored. When evaluating communication in my workplace, I will analyze the interpersonal communication between my coworkers and our supervisors and how they interact with customers. ... Supervisors and Workers: Communication between supervisors and workers is very important in the workplace. ... Effective communication helps staff members understand how their jobs and their units fit into the larger organization and contribute to meeting its objectives. For example, when information is restricted, individuals and units cannot appreciate the "big picture" and tend to work independently, often in conflict with one another. At RCD I have observed communication between supervisors and their workers to not be very effective. ... She states, “The communication is poor and room for improvement is greatly needed. ... They need to realize that successful communication is no one-way process. To communicate successfully managers and supervisors have to understand the other person, and have to work hard to get the other person to understand them (Winnett 2004) Coworkers with Coworkers: Communication between my coworkers and myself in my department I can personally say is effective. ... “Improvement is needed,” says Brenda, “Having new upper management, to join the company, their style of managing has a slight break down in communication.” I have observed that communication among coworkers within different departments needs improvement. ... Whenever I receive these calls I put myself in the customer’s place. ... Not returning calls or failing to respond to other communication attempts is just bad manners, plain and simple. ... Companies need to rid themselves of the “bad manners bug” and eliminate the “non-communication” viruses that are so pervasive in business today. ... Phone Communication: In observing phone communication at RCD, I came to the conclusion that it is one of the most vital technological devices that is essential for the daily operations of the company. ... Use of the Email: As I have observed the use of email has primarily taken over face-to-face communication at RCD. ... Its dramatically changed the way we work. ... Non-work related email normally contains jokes, greeting cards, funny pictures, surveys, etc. ... Unfortunately, most of these non-work related emails are useless and that is where the problem starts. ... That it is all right to send out non-work related email here and there? ... Policies and procedures regarding email abuse should be in place and clearly state the consequences of not complying. As stated earlier, managers should also avoid sending out non-work related emails. ... The use of email has taken over this type of communication at RCD. ... Use of Cell Phones and/or Pagers: The cell phone and or pager are critical tools in helping us balance work and home life.
