To meet the new demand for regional jets, airlines turned to two major companies; Bombardier, based in Canada, and Embraer based in Brazil. ...
Bombardier and Embraer are two very different companies that share one similarity; they both have dealings in the aerospace industry. Bombardier was founded in 1942 by J. Armand Bombardier. Armand Bombardier, who considered himself an inventor rather than a large business tycoon, invented a tracked vehicle for transportation on snow-covered terrain which he named the "Auto-Neige". Unlike Bombardier, Embraer has no one “founding father”. ... The legacies of both Guamao and Dantos-Dumont live on today in Embraer, Brazil’s largest exporter in 1999-2001. Embraer is currently the worlds number four producer of aircraft, right behind Bombardier which is also a major economical power in Canada.
Bombardier and Embraer’s beginnings differ in many respects. Bombardier began in 1967, after changing its name from L’Auto-Neige Bombardier Limited, (the companys name from 1942-1967) Bombardier did not start with the intent of building aircraft like Embraer did. Bombardier built many things before entering the aircraft market. After the initial successes of the Auto-Neige, Bombardier began to expand in the 1970’s with the acquisition of the Austrian company Lohnerwerk, which today is the supplier of engines for Bombardier’s snowmobiles, terrain vehicles, and personal watercraft. ... Bombardier Aerospace has its first roots in 1986 when Bombardier acquired Canadair, which was Canada’s leading aircraft manufacture at the time. In October of 1989, Bombardier acquired the company that received the first aircraft production contract in history, Short Brothers, a Northern Ireland manufacturer of civil and military aircraft. In 1990, Bombardier acquired Learjet, and then in 1992 acquired de Havilland tio complete the larger part of Bombardier’s expansion into the aerospace industry. However, unlike Bombardier, which was founded as a consumer-driven company, Embraer, which was founded in 1969, started as a government initiative to produce military planes. Embraer’s first product was the Ipanema, which had its maiden flight in 1970 but never went into production. Embraer’s first major success came with its first flight of the Xavante, a trainer and attack aircraft. The Xavante was in production from 1971 to 1982 and in total Embraer produced 182 of these planes. Embraer became privatized in 1994 and continues to produce military and commercial aircraft today.
Today, Bombardier Aerospace has its headquarters near Montreal’s International Airport and is an internationally integrated organization with excellent market access and manufacturing operations all around the globe. ... Bombardier currently employs more than 33,000 employees as of January 31, 2002, and has had revenue of 23. ... Embraer, which has been gaining significant market share in the past years, employs 12,227 people as of December 31, 2002. Embraer also has firm orders for the coming years that could equal 22. ... Like Bombardier, Embraer has many international production outposts including its headquarters based in São José dos Campos, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Embraer also has offices and customer services based in Australia, China, France, Singapore and the United States.
