Isolation Observations 2
We have all seen, read, or heard in the news about recent illnesses such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and it’s effects on the population of the world. ... Because of such recent public awareness on this and other easily contracted illness, I have chosen isolation procedures observed by the facility where I am employed as the focus of this patient safety observation paper.
Isolation and infection control are a big issue in any medical facility, whether it be a small 40-bed hospital or large 600-bed hospital. ... The facility at which I am employed takes this fact into consideration and has a very explicit, well-defined policy regarding isolation procedures. We take extreme efforts to identify patients that are potential isolation candidates and act upon our instincts immediately.
Our policy and procedure identifies four different types of isolation patients: Contact I precautions, Contact II precautions, Respiratory Precautions, and Special Respiratory Precautions. ... Placards are placed on each patient’s door indicating to staff members and visitors that the patient is in isolation, what type of isolation they are in, and as an effective reminder to apply the personal protective equipment (ppe) as indicated.
