My Moral Dilemma
When I first read the directions for this term paper, I had doubts about being able to find a suitable topic. It seemed impossible that I had ever experienced a moral dilemma, because I associated moral dilemmas with only horrible acts, such as murder and theft. So, I read the definition, talked to other students about their thoughts, and I soon had to realize that I have experienced moral dilemmas hundreds of times in my life. Of course, I did not murder anybody (and have no intention to), but I have been in situations where I acted or was tempted to act in a way that was inconsistent with my moral beliefs. ... It was a fairly easy decision to make, since the dilemma I am going to write about still stands out in my memories. ... Going with them was the same as going against my moral code. ... As I analyzed my behavior, I found that stage 3 of the conventional level of Kohlberg’s levels of moral development relates to my dilemma. According to Huffman (2004), at the conventional level "the primary moral concern is with being nice and gaining approval. ... Since I lied, which was inconsistent with my moral beliefs, I could not enjoy the party, because I felt guilty.
