The main character in Jesus’ Son (Mr. Head) is a junkie throughout most of the book. The book does not devote much time to showing him strung-out, instead it is implied through his introspective moments. It is important that this implication be realized in a film inspired by the book because the book has the advantage of time to establish the decline of Mr. Head’s physical state, while a film will have to come right out and show the audience what is going on with Mr. Head. The best point in the book to show Mr. Head’s state as a junkie is the scene in which a girl he meets on a train takes him to the Savoy Hotel. (Pg. 100) This scene should remain true to the book by representing the events described in the “Dirty Wedding” chapter, as well showing the audience the fragile state of a heroin addict deteriorating. The best place to start this scene is on the train when Mr. Head meets the “dear little black child, all messed up on skag.” At this point Mr. Head is a junkie, but not yet sick, so he should look somewhat normal, although he is obviously disturbed since he is on the train running away from his problems with Michelle, his girlfriend, and the abortion she just had.
