The book I chose to read for this assignment was Lost in Translation by Nicole Mones. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It kept me interested throughout and I feel I learned a lot about the Chinese culture and geography than I did before I read the book. The book started right off with mysterious activities by the main character Alice Mannegan, a 36 year old English translator in Beijing. We find out soon that she is heading to an underground club to meet up with a Chinese man for a one night stand. She is extremely attracted to the Chinese men, and only Chinese men satisfy her. She meets up with a guy Lu Ming, and she tells him her name is Yulian, which means Fragrant Lotus, which shows something about Chinese culture. She only uses this name when meeting up with guys because the lotus is an extremely attractive symbol in Chinese culture, which is why a bound foot was called a lotus foot. Directly after the one night stand, we hear about her beginning work with an American archeologist, Adam Spencer, who is in china searching for the lost treasure of the “Peking Man.” It becomes very clear, very soon that she is in china to avoid her past in America.
