The Good Earth Living in rural turn-of-the-century China, Wang Lung is a young, humble farmer living with his elderly father. It is his wedding day and his father has chosen a slave from the nearby wealthy House of Hwang to be his bride. Wang Lung prepares for the day and retrieves his bride. O-Lan is an unattractive slave, who Wang Lung is somewhat disappointed in when he realizes that her feet are not bound. Though pleased with each other, Wang Lung and O-Lan exchange few words. They cultivate a bountiful harvest and O-Lan becomes pregnant and bears Wang Lung a son. Due to the success of his harvests, Wang Lung is able to purchase land from the House of Hwang who have fallen on hard times due to their excessive lifestyle. O-lan gives birth to a second son following another successful harvest. As Wang Lung’s wealth grows he buys more land from the Hwangs, and his uncle pursues money from him. Wang Lung is forced to give in although he knows the money will be spent on frivolous things, as custom dictates that the younger generations should provide for the elder.
