“Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne
“Young Goodman Brown” is one of America’s greatest gothic tales. Taking place in the town of Salem Massachusetts during the witching times of 1692, the story centers around a man named Goodman Brown who is struggling with his conscious and his religious faith. ... Through these symbols, different feelings are conveyed, ideas, and morals, that Goodman Brown is going through. The story of Young Goodman Brown is a story about one man who actually represents every young man in those days, and possibly men today, struggling with good and evil. ...
In the first paragraph Hawthorne give the names of two of the main characters which are of course “Goodman”, and his wife “Faith”. Ironically “Goodman” is the title given by puritans to a male head of a household, in these days probably a farmer or any other normal citizen. “Young Goodman Brown” is the portrait of any good young man struggling with life’s choices and difficulties, in this case struggling with his own spiritual path. ... In the beginning “Faith” is calling her husbands name, “Goodman” (meaning the average citizen) as he leaves on his journey. This paints the image of Goodman Brown, psychologically being torn between Christianity (his faith) and selling his soul to the devil, which is what he is on his way to do. ... They symbolize a badge of innocence of which Goodman Brown is leaving. ...
As Goodman Brown continues on his walk he meets up with his “fellow traveler” on the path.
