Handmaids Tale Margaret AtwoodScience fiction or historical fact

The Handmaids Tale is a popular science fiction novel set in late twentieth century America, written by the widely recognised feminist author Margaret Atwood. One could see the novell, as a critic, Angela Carter did as a Superlative exercise in science fiction, or maybe as a prophetic novel of how Atwood views the future of mankind to be, or maybe just as a clever amalgam of past historical and political events, well disgused beneath the main narrative , which is backed with generic features, ie the imaginative use of different tenses.

However, in The Handmaids Tale, there is no real evidence of any outcome to to this inversion, but we can see from the Historical notes section at the back of the book that Gilead as a monotheocracy was shortlived and so not long after the setting of the book there must have been a time of much political upheaval and change.
