Tracy McFarlane’s seminar paper presented another aspect of the migration dilemma; only, it was related to educational migration. ... However, her findings indicated that these women coped with their experience in a health way – and this she attributed to the adoption of ‘positive marginality’. ... McFarlane’s presentation, it was noted that it was very well received by the audience at the 2003 Derek Gordon Research Seminar. ... McFarlane called ‘positive marginality’. This is where students accepted their differences; and in turn viewed it in a positive way. ... Even more than this, positive marginality was experience through group support. ... When students came into to the Universities simply to get their degree and go home they experienced greater marginality. However, when they became participants in these activist groups their positive marginality was increased – thus enriching their university experience. ...
