As war II ended in Europe, japanese resistance in the pacific stiffened. They made last ditch stands at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. U.S war officials determined that Iwojama had to be taken because Japanese interceptors based on the island attacked B-29 bombers flying to and from Japan. U.S pilots needed the atoll as haven for crippled planes that were unable to reach their bases at Tinian and Saipan.
