Bertolt Brecht’s play, “The Caucasian Chalk Circle,” written in 1944, primarily addresses the themes of communism, justice, morals, class and religion. ... The central characters in these two stories, Grusha and Azdak, are used to great effect by Brecht in brining across many of his themes. ... However, at this point in the play Brecht has Azdak turn himself in to the soldiers, saying that he is a traitor: “And he was ashamed of himself, he accused himself and ordered the policeman/ To take him to Nukha, to Court, to be judged. ... I think that Brecht does this, firstly, to demonstrate that fact that Azdak is very strange as most people would try and cover up the fact they had done this so that they would not get caught, unlike Azdak. ... ” Brecht uses Azdak’s contempt for the “Statue Book” to show that Azdak is very unconventional as he openly flaunts the fact that he judges by his own rules, and is therefore different from other judges as they all probably judge their cases based on the laws of the country. Thorough doing this Brecht also shows that Azdak, and also Brecht, is opposed to the capitalist system of laws that is present. ...
However, I feel that despite his unorthodox nature Azdak is in fact a sympathetic character as Brecht uses Azdak as a primary tool to bring across his themes in the play and messages from these themes. I think that Azdak’s rulings in court serve to demonstrate Brecht’s themes of justice and communism.
