The effect of pain on the brain
Anxiety and attention are two basic processes commonly associated with pain. ... This outcome has come to be known as the “Cocktail Party Effect”. ... In view of these findings, Shapiro and Raymond (1994) proposed an alternative account of the AB effect. ...
Flor, Knost and Birbaumer (1997) conducted experiments substantiating previous reports of enhanced autonomic reactivity in chronic pain patients to words descriptive of their pain problem, but extended them to the cortical processing of words. This shows that there seems to be an altered processing of pain- related information in chronic pain patients because pain- words are more salient to them. Shapiro et al (1997) used “The Cocktail Effect” to examine a theory of attention.
