“A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner Throughout “A Rose for Emily” William Faulkner describes the life of an upper class woman after the Civil War. Miss Emily, who is the main character of the story, was born in a wealthy, agricultural family. Her father dies and leaves Emily without any family in the house except for Tobe. Tobe was a black servant that ran errands to the market and took care of Miss Emily. To the people of this town, Miss Emily was looked upon as a respectable yet mysterious lady. It seemed she had everything a person would want to possess, but in reality Emily was living in the past. This story has one important theme. The message in “A Rose for Emily,” is a struggle between the past, which is seen through Miss Emily, and the present, which is seen through the through the rising generation. The time of the story is set after the Civil War. The overall mood of the story and the attitude of the narrator are serious. The setting contributes to the mood because of the era and the way Faulkner describes different elements in the story. An example of this would be Miss Emily’s house. Miss Emily house was a “big, squarish frame” on the outside with faded white coating of paint that was surrounded with cotton gins and a gas station. This seems very dull and bleak.
