Voting in Canada

In Canada, there are less people voting “every passing election” . In their articles, both John Ibbitson, “Let’s Think More Deeply About Voter Turnout”, and Chantal Hébert, “Inviting the Tyranny of the Minority”, try to understand the reason for this apathy that is growing strongly with time. I agree with the position that John Ibbitson takes in finding the root of this issue and in saying that there are various motives for people’s indifference when choosing who they want to be governed by. Chantal Hébert mainly explains that the number of turnouts depends on the province the election is being held in. She argues that the average of voters is higher in provinces that have an ethnically homogeneous society, such as Prince Edward Island, where the “average of voters is higher...than in central Canada.” Ms. Hébert does not question that age or “the length of one’s Canadian citizenship” influence the decline of turnouts throughout Canada though she believes those are not the only motives.
