What is sin? Sin is an offense against religious or moral law. Sin is a major theme in Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. All of the major characters have committed a sin of some sort; however, one sinner stands above all the rest. While sin is prevalent in many characters in The Scarlet Letter, Chillingworth is guilty of more sin than either Hester Prynne or Reverend Dimmesdale.
