The Odyssey Odysseus and his valiant men had been straining at the oars for days on end when the cry rang out through the ship “Land ahead!” The crew scrambled from the ship onto land to find the place desolate, with the trees reduced to stumps and the earth pitted with acid pools, and large fissures ridding the ground. Suddenly a great winged beast with three serpent-like heads and scales as great as bronze plates attacked them. It swooped down on them, unleashed a wave of acid on three of Odysseus’ terror stricken men, and then preceded to seize them in its great talons and rip off their arms and devour them.
