The literature that was written as a result of the Vietnam War is unlike any literature before the war. Most literature that was related to war before Vietnam, glorified death and taught the righteousness of war. It is probably true that many pre-Vietnam writers attempted to expose the horrors of war, but before Vietnam, there was no audience for that type of writing. In Vietnam, a number of things were different. For one, this war was widely opposed by a very diverse group of people, which set the stage for a literary breakthrough on works concerning war. Another factor was that this was the first “televised war.” People in their homes saw the horrors of war and would not be content with literature that told of the glory of war when war was obviously not glorious. ...
Poems that were written as a result of the Vietnam War are much more focused on the realities of war then the old glory poems of past wars. Michael Casey’s Obscenities (1972) is a collection of poems written by Casey about Vietnam (O’Nan 81).
