GATSBY BACKGROUND
•     12 years old he met Dan Cody whose lifestyle influenced him- his yacht “represented all the beauty and glamour in the world”-material aspiration
•     Gatsby created his own identity for himself and created the kind of boy a 17 year old would create- confident
•     At the end of the novel his father shows Nick his schedule- ways he could improve- shows determination

GATSBY MATERIAL SUCCESS
•     2 sides- thought he was a typical made man and a good example of how hard work can lead to material success- living the dream- money is through crime
•     Nick admired his “extraordinary gift for hope”
•     His house- symbol of success “factual imitation (not the real thing) of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy”- clear vision of success
•     His parties- “In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and champagne and the stars”- simile shows intense movement, servants, orchestra, bad behaved guests- symbol of extravagance and carelessness of the rich.
