The poem “We Real Cool” is a part of my poetry anthology because it relates to my age group and the customs of teenagers. Most of the time, teenagers think they know everything and usually, they are just being foolish and ignorant. Gwendolyn Brooks is being sarcastic in this poem by saying, “we real cool” (line 1), then explaining actions and consequences of living foolishly and carelessly. The tone throughout the poem is serious, yet sarcastic and sends a message that serious consequences can come from following people and trends.
