the shawshank redempMetaphorical sounds have been used to allow the audience to vividly see the images intended by the poems. Musical ideas are developed according to the text of the poems. Word painting is found in ‘Never No More’, one specific example, in the line “Kite tail tied on a telephone wire”, where a ‘ping’ sound is here to create an image of the telephone wire. ‘Autumn Testament 20’ includes word painting heard in the first stanza – “Somebody in my dreams was shaking a blanket”. A ‘whooshing’ sound is heard to illustrate the blanket being shaken. Furthermore, ‘The Maori Jesus’ is the most evident instance of word painting, as it is fundamentally used in the entire duration of the piece.
