SETTING:
Since the short story is short, setting often is condensed. The entire story may take place in one, two or three settings. Unlike a novel, the short story does not have the opportunity to develop settings, thereby making it easier to understand.
Because of this restriction, the setting usually plays an important part in the short story. The writer, in a very short span, must explore his or her theme/themes and characters. Often, the setting plays a central role in the story and helps you understand the author’s message.
When reading a short story, ask yourself: Why is this story set in this location? ... What would be lost or different if the story were to be set in a different location or a different time? ...
Obviously, a story set in the nighttime would take on a different meaning if it were set in the hot noontime of a desert.
