An acquaintance of mine by the name of Jon was considering switching schools. Essentially, Jon wasn’t the one considering anything. His parents had come up with the idea after Jon had found himself in trouble with the principal for the second time that week. Jon was one of a small number of Puerto Rican boys in his grade. The rest were white. Jon and his Puerto Rican friends rarely hung out with the other kids and frequently got themselves into trouble. He became disconnected from his family and started doing poorly in school. His dad expects a lot from him and I think that’s part of the reason he acts rebellious at times. You see Jon’s father was in the navy for 15 years before he was released due to health complications. Jon’s mother, on the other hand, is almost the complete opposite of his father. She is gentle, caring, sympathetic, almost too sympathetic at times.
