One of the main controversies of the day, is whether or not peer to peer file sharing is illegal and just what the entertainment industry has the rights to do about it. ... According to the ruling of a federal judge in Los Angeles, California, file-sharing services are not responsible for the possible illegal actions of its users. File sharing services, or peer-to-peer networks refer to any network that does not have fixed clients and servers, instead using peer nodes that function as both client/server (“Peer-to-peer”). ... This outcome is very important for the file sharing movement, because it means that users are not necessarily breaking the law. Grokster and Morpheus, two major file sharing service providers, were declared to have valuable use in promoting and distributing music from independent artists, bands, and musicians (“Judge Finds…”). ... Such is the case today, with file sharing on peer-to-peer programs through the internet. ... According to, “Peer-to-peer File Sharing”, CD sales are down six percent in 2002 compared to the previous year. ...
People and groups opposed to the file sharing movement claim that the majority of use is that of pirating, and the products used to gain illegal content should be ordered to stop. “The use of Kazaa, the Internet’s most popular song and movie swapping program, has dropped by about 25 percent in the United States since the recording industry began a crackdown on file sharers, according to new data from Neilsen/NetRatings” (Evangelista). This would stop the millions of users currently using file-sharing software from sharing anything.
