There were multiple sins committed in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. Hester Prynne committed adultery in a Puritan society. Rev. Dimmesdale, being the father of Hester’s child, kept his adulterous secret hidden in his heart, where it weakened his mind and body. Chillingworth, Hester’s husband, gained knowledge of Dimmesdale’s true identity, and began to torture the clergyman mentally and physically. Chillingworth’s sin was more evil because it was secret, he did not repent, and he evilly impacted the lives of others. Chillingworth’s sin was only knowledge to Hester and Dimmesdale. Although Dimmesdale’s sin was secret, all in the town knew Hester’s crime.
