Although both the book The Unredeemed Captive and the film “Black Robe” aim to describe some of the first encounters between Europeans and Indians, they vary in doing so. This may partly have to do with the Europeans in The Unredeemed Captive being from England, and in “Black Robe” they hail from France.
In the film “Black Robe” the main purpose was for the French Jesuit missionaries, such as “Black Robe” himself (Father Laforgue) to convert the natives of Canada. ... In “Black Robe” the Indians were not especially happy to have the French “tagging along” with them upriver. ... But maybe it was what happened after the French converted some of the Indians, as in “Black Robe”.
