Although the difference between discipline and abuse has always been blurry, the definitions of each are no where near similar. Satisfying the needs or expressing the negative feelings of parents is abuse. The government defines abuse as any action resulting in broken bones, bruises, burns, cuts, or internal organ damage. ... Learning what is right and what is wrong is the main focus of discipline (Discipline versus Abuse). ... Those adults without children did not think twice about whether or not to spank a child. ... Maybe the problem is not the behavior of the child, but the laziness of the parents. However, all people have encountered the following situation: You are at the grocery store and cannot help but notice the young rambunctious boy that refuses to sit in his mother’s cart’s child seat. ... The child soon becomes bored of this and begins to whine that he wants to return home to watch cartoons. The child, of course, is the child of the most patient person in the world. ... “If that child were my own, you better believe that this would not be happening. A swift spank and that child would be as behaved as anyone I know. ... In Illinois, the law currently states that an "abused child includes any child whose parent/immediate family member/person responsible for the childs welfare/individual residing in the same house/paramour of childs parent inflicts excessive corporal punishment” This is stated in the Illinois Complied Statutes in Section 325. Basically, a parent or guardian can spank the child as long as it is not excessive and resulting in constant bruising, bleeding, or hospitalized wounds. By checking the statues on the issue of abuse, most states all believe that hitting is a form of discipline that does not cross into abuse until serious injury or mental distress is attained. ... When people hear the words “spanking law,” they automatically think that if they were to hit their child, they will be going to jail for abuse. This is not the case. ... The law is only in place to insure that there is a division and qualifications for what is to be called abuse.
