David Leavitt’s book Family Dancing presents emotional stories about families broken up by various factors. Cancer, divorce, tragic accidents, and homosexuality are all topics covered by Leavitt; while they are all causes of the ultimate division of these fictional families, Leavitt incorporates symbols that convey one underlying message that can be applied to real families: you can distance yourself from family, but your family will continue to exist. The desire to be isolated from family stems from Leavitt’s overall observation that family members are deeply flawed. ... Yet, Nina is still her daughter, and they are bound to each other because they are family. ...
Leavitt’s use of the cordless phone symbolizes the book’s running theme of the desire to detach one’s self from family and the inability to easily forget the past.
