Faith Hospital has made tremendous impact, over many decades, in the community it has served. Unfortunately, the increasing cost in healthcare management, strict government regulations, and patient’s rights initiatives battle with the survivability of Faith and it’s ability to serve it’s community. In this case study, we’ll examine Faith’s current situation and devise a strategic road map to achieve it’s mission: “With the foundation and commitment of our spiritual heritage and values, our mission is to promote the health and well-being of the people in the communities we serve through a comprehensive continuum of services provided in collaboration with the partners who share the same vision and values”. As a healthcare provider, Faith Hospital is responsible for ensuring it’s services are provided in the best interests of it’s patients, but without failing to fulfill it’s business responsibilities. In practice, however, patients and staff members frequently act upon their own systems of beliefs in carrying out medical practices that create moral, ethical, legal, and financial implications. Based on Faith’s strong religious heritage, patients and staff hold values and beliefs that impact the delivery of medical services. Many feel that medical intervention conflicts with their religious beliefs or personal moral convictions. And, based on those values, patients have refused to take certain medical advice and staff members have refused to provide certain services. When medical services are being provided, there have been incidents where drastic measures such as Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) directives have been initiated or dismissed based on the request of a patient’s family, despite any existing written consent from the patient.
