King Among Men
Martin Luther King was one of the most successful minorities leaders in all of
American History. In this essay I will write about the highlights of his thirteen year public
life, a summary of the major speeches and literature of the King movement, The
Birmingham Protests and The March on Washington. ... King and his nonviolent
protest was the dominant force in the civil rights movement during the decade from 1957
to 1968.
Martin Luther King began his public life on December 5 1955 in Montgomery,
Alabama. ... Under the leadership of King, Montgomery
blacks formed the Montgomery Improvement Association, they boycotted bus lines, and
referred their case to the state court and then to the Supreme Court. ... This movement had propelled King into a position of
national prominence.
King wanted to build upon his success in Montgomery, he was now a national
hero and a civil-rights figure of growing importance, he summoned together a number of
black leaders in 1957 and laid the basis for the organization of a regional group called the
Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a group of one hundred southern clergymen
of the belief that civil rights leadership must be assumed by churches and church leaders. ... Martin Luther King, Jr. ... King resigned from Dexter Avenue
Baptist Church and returned to Atlanta to become co-pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church
