Symbols of time are used to convey important messages in the novel, while timing itself controls the lives of the characters in the novel. ... Also, the timing of certain events in the novel lead to the unfortunate but captivating downfall of Jay Gatsby. Each manner that time is used provides spice and suspense to The Great Gatsby.
A very important use of time in The Great Gatsby is the symbolism of time. The most apparent symbolism of time occurs during Chapter 5. It reads,
“His [Gatsby’s] head leaned back so far that it rested against the face of a defunct mantelpiece clock. ... 91)
This event occurs during a meeting between Gatsby and his former lover, Daisy. The fact that Gatsby catches the clock symbolizes his desperate attempt to stop time. He wants to regress to a time when he and Daisy were bound to be married. Although this is Gatsby’s wish, it never comes true as they can never be together.
