David Norman Dinkins was the first African American mayor of New York from 1989 to 1993. ... Upon graduation from Howard, he furthered his education at Brooklyn Law School in 1953, advanced to joining Dyett and Phipps Firm in 1956, a year later changing it to Dyett, Alexander, and Dinkins Firm, and then proceeded to run for mayor of New York City.
