Frederic Henry is depicted as a man of responsibility. Henry instills with this notion of himself a humble nature, and he does not anticipate any esteem for his duty. He discourages his comrade from seeking awards of merit for him, even after he has been brutally injured. Intangible concepts such as faith, honor, and patriotism mean nothing to him beside such explicit facts of war as the names of the towns in which he has fought and the numbers of annihilated streets. Henry's response to Catherine Barkley is quite astounding, even against this desolate setting.
