Application 7(A) Programs for Gifted and Talented students · Does the district have a definition of gifted and talented? The definition is a student who shows a remarkably advanced level of skill in a variety of areas compared to kids of the same age. · What criteria does the district use to identify students as G/T and to select them to participate in a program? We have recently begun a “talent” search for gifted and talented individuals in the early grades of school. Starting out in kindergarten and then up to fifth grade. There are several ways a student can be picked for the gifted and talented program, and include teacher or parent recommendations and testing following the recommendation. The gifted and talented children are then sent to one of the Academy’s here in Garland. · How many students are a part of the program? About 13% of the school student body participated in the Gifted and talented program. · What about the demographics of the students in the program? Is there an ethnic and gender breakdown for students in G/T? What about any bilingual and/or ESL students? Any students in G/T who are also on free/reduced lunch? The demographics of the G/T program include more white people than African American, or Hispanic.
