Macbeth Essay
This play is one of Shakespeare’s great tragedies. ...
At the start of the play, the first characters you meet are three witches, who are evil and are going to meet Macbeth which suggests to us that Macbeth is evil (because witches are supposed to be evil) before we even meet him. The witches say “Fair is foul, and foul is fair” which Macbeth repeats in scene three, the writer is also telling us not to judge people by their appearance.
However in scene two there is a completely different approach to Macbeth as he now appears to be a hero, “O, valiant cousin Worthy gentleman!” this is what the king calls Macbeth after he returns from a battle, which they won and as a reward he is given the land of Cawdor.
By scene three, the witches return but this time they meet Macbeth, which tells us that he might be up to or getting up to no good, Macbeth also repeats the words in scene one that the witches had said which also ties him further towards the evil side. When the witches finally meet Macbeth they tell him their first prophecy, “Macbeth! ... ” Macbeth seems affected by this statement. Macbeth is scared by this statement because he has already had evil thoughts like this. After he recovers he quotes “Stay you imperfect speakers, tell me more,” Macbeth commands them like a king but the witches disappear not listening to him. Macbeth begins to doubt them “… can the devil speak true” he thinks that they are lying because they are evil. ... Macbeth is now admitting to having evil thoughts. Macbeth doesn’t know weather to kill the king or let him die naturally “if chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me, without my stir”
However, in scene four Duncan chose Malcolm to be heir to the throne, instead of Macbeth, but this is just another obstacle in Macbeth’s way.
