This chapter examines the homosexuals and why are them object of discrimination. Homosexuality is not inherently deviant but it is defined and labeled as deviant. The first part talks about the concept of deviance and its implications. As we all know, homosexuals are a minority group in the United States. They are relatively powerless and the objects of negative stereotypes and discrimination. Unlike the status of most minorities, the minority status of homosexuals is based on deviance from society’s norms rather than on ascribes characteristics. There are several important characteristics of social deviance: • It is socially created • It is a relative concept • It is found universally in societies • It serves society by reaffirming the rules • It allows the powerful to determine who or what is deviant • It creates an atmosphere in which deviants can be stigmatized for their disreputable behavior.
