I have a friend who is upset that her doctor doesn’t explain medical issues to her. He just mumbles words in medical terms, and then asks her to sign a consent form before rushing out of the room. She asked me if she should tell him that he needs to be more specific or just accept his half coherent explanation and trust him to do his best. I decided to help my friend and do some checking around about informed consent and was shocked at what I found. I read an article on the internet about informed consent- or in this case lack of it. It was about gynecological exams on women who are under anesthesia while awaiting OBG surgeries. Some of the top medical schools in the United States are letting medical students perform pelvic exams on women who are unconscious and without their consent.
