War On Waste

The article I have decided to look into mainly relates to sustainability. The article is by Roston, Eric and is titled “New war on waste”. The article is about William McDonough. It discusses his vision for a new and improved sustainable life. He brings about examples such as having biodegradable soles in the shoes so that when the soles wear off microbes and sorts could degrade them. Which personally I believe is a very good idea. According to the article he has managed to make Nike change their shoes from toxins. This way we are giving materials second uses rather than having just one; we are recycling them. McDonough was also able to influence a lot of other major people around the world. An example that the article gives is when McDonough was able to influence Bill Ford of the Ford Motor Co to make a really green factory. The article also mentions how people’s views into having a sustainable life have changed over the years. “There was a time not too long ago when Big businesses tended simply to fight environmentalists…” (Roston, Eric 2002) This quote taken from the text shows that people’s views into this issue has changed dramatically. Now people continue talking about sustainability when just a few years ago it wouldn’t have mattered to them weather we were reusing, reducing and recycling. I think the main reason that people are now starting to care about sustainability is because environmentalists and ourselves are demanding products that are eco friendly. I have decided to focus my essay on certain areas but specifically on this quote from the article: “The ultimate goal is to create a sustainable world, enabling humans to “love the children of all species – not just our own – for all time” (Roston, Eric 2002) I would be discussing about how people are now adopting into this kind of sustainable life and would eventually be able to make a judgement on the article. To have a better understanding of this topic it is necessary to understand the meaning of sustainability. According to the “World Commission on Environment and Development.” “Sustainable development: The ability of humanity to ensure that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development is not a fixed state of harmony, but rather a process of change in which the exploitation of resources, the direction of investments, the orientation of technological development and institutional changes are made consistent with future as well as present needs.” (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987) Basically I think this means that we have to think about our future generations and not just ourselves.
