Over Coming Life’s Challenges Victor Hugo is the author of the book, Les Miserables. This book is about characters that triumph over adversity and all of life’s curveballs. This book is set in France. This classic piece of literature has been made into a long running play. It has also been made into a movie. The movie Les Miserable gives the audience a first hand look at the people of the times and the hardships that they endured. The story takes the audience through the life of a man that is given a second chance at bettering his life. The main character Jean Valjean does his best to live a good and honorable life no matter what challenges he must face. The story has romance and plenty of tense moments that will keep the audience on the edge of their seat. The main characters of the story are Jean Valjean, Fantine, Cosette, and Inspector Javert. Jean Valjean is a man that is given a second chance. He spends around 20 years in a prison rock quarry. When he is finally let out on bail he stops at a bishops house where he is offered a nice meal and a warm bed for the night. Valjean is surprised by the generosity of the man because most people of the time would not offer an ex-con a warm bed for the night. During dinner Valjean asks the bishop “How do you know I won’t try to kill you tonight” and the bishop responds “How do you know that I won’t try to kill you, you don’t I guess we will have to trust each other.” I thought that was a statement of how kind and smart the bishop was. Later in the night Valjean decides to steal the silver that was used during dinner but the bishop catches him. Valjean hits the bishop on the head and gets away. A few days later Valjean is brought back to the bishop’s house by authorities, because he said the bishop had given him the silver. What really surprised me was that the bishop said yes that he did give him the silver, and then he told Valjean that he forgot the candle sticks that bishop told him to take. Of course the authorities are shocked as well as Valjean.
