What is punk rock? Punk rock was developed in the 1970’s. “It represented a two-pronged rebellion; against middle-class society and the upper classes, and against the Rock establishment.” The “goal” of punk rock was expressing frustrated rage and outrageous acts to trigger an outraged reaction. Original punk pioneers broke out on the scene in 1977, bands such as The Sex Pistols, The Clash, and The Ramones were the bands given credit at bringing the music from behind closed doors. However, the earliest dated musicians labeled “punk rock” go as far back as to the 1940’s , with artists like, Patti Smith in 1946, and of course Lou Reed & the Velvet Underground in 1940. ... Other bands would go as far as even going into their crowds and punching them. ... Punk rock was mainly about an “I don’t care” attitude and expressing oneself as the pleased.
Clothing of punk rock was just as outrageous as the acts sometimes. Popular fashions with the clothing of punk rock were ripped, worn in, and dirty clothes. ... ”
Lyrics of punk rock were also aspects of the very controversial scene. ... Overall, the lyrics hold truth that can only be heard in a punk rock song, or as Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols said, “sheer, brazen honesty.”
Punk rock stayed heavy in the early 80’s, and new bands began emerging all over. The new “punk rock” artists of the 80’s had different sounds than what the music originally started out with, yet they had the same, but toned down principles in mind.
