Harper Lee has shown many different kinds of courage throughout the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird”. The author interprets real courage as the mental or moral strength a person uses to face against fears, difficulties and danger. It is not the physical courage when a man has a gun in his hand and shoot a ‘helpless’ mad dog as Atticus Finch has said to his children. According to Ms Lee, real courage is the belief in egalitarianism and the bravery of showing it out in a prejudiced society. It is not only to believe and show it but it is also to stand up for it when people are afraid to stand up for themselves and do the right thing. ‘In a sick society, the well man, the healthy man, is the outsider, the odd one.’ Acting courageously does entail some degrees of suffering and disadvantage. This is because that person has to single himself/herself out of the prejudiced community and say what he/she believes is right. Such an example is that Atticus Finch has taken up Tom Robinson’s case despite people’s objections and the potential danger that he is risking his family as well as himself.
