Symbols in Siddhartha

A Symbolic Understanding

Siddhartha, written by Hermann Hesse, displays a young man’s thirst for knowledge and the wisdom he gains through the experiences in his life. Siddhartha, as a young man, begins his adventure as a Brahmin’s son and then adopts many different perspectives of life later in the story as well as encountering different people. The symbolic objects and people that Siddhartha encounters each represent a different idea to help the reader better understand his experiences. Hermann Hesse uses symbols in the novel Siddhartha to reveal the theme of knowledge is communicable, but wisdom must be gained from experience.
One of the symbols Hesse uses to reveal the theme is Govinda. He symbolizes Siddhartha’s shadow because he mimics almost all of Siddhartha’s actions. He is the friend of Siddhartha and follows him around wherever he goes. ... He is the person that restrains Siddhartha from following his own chosen path.
