In China, the family is the core of every aspect of society. Everything revolves around the dynamics, structure system, and code of behavior that a family portrays. Chinese family was traditionally designed around the Confucian ideals of harmony and structure; thus, it was based on hierarchy with specific duties depending on generation, age, and gender. However, this valuing of the family and its essences has slowly begun to fade with the advancements in society and technology along with the increasing Western influence that has taken control over China. This created a more modern family structure.
In the traditional Chinese family, the oldest man of the oldest generation was the head of the household, with authority over the family, but also has the duty to promote its well being and to represent the family to the outside world. ... Women in Chinese society were placed on a lower rung on the hierarchy than men. They were expected to follow what were called the gthree obediencefs;h daughters obeyed fathers, wives obeyed husbands, and mothers in old age obeyed sons who had inherited ghead of the familyh status.
